Minor pain in your fingertips and wrist are perfectly normal for beginners. This will gradually disappear. However if you feel sharp pain anywhere then you should stop and rest. Listen to your body!
-
The right technique will prevent most painful situations from occurring. Keep your fret hand close to the fret board, fingers close to each other and cupped when fretting notes and chords, wrist down and keep your thumb firmly anchored in place on the neck (back of guitar.) You may move your thumb when muting.
-
Start your guitar playing with a warm up of your hands and wrists.
-
Wash and dry your hands before picking up your guitar, this will keep dirt and oily residues off your strings and fret board, prolonging the sound and life of your strings and guitar.
-
Keep the fingernails of your fret hand shortened; else they will interfere with your fretting of notes.
-
Clean the guitar neck and fret board after playing this keeps the neck clean and prolongs string life.
-
Be patient with yourself. Even the fingering of certain chords can take quite some time to master. This is perfectly normal so do not get discouraged. It takes time to develop the muscle memory to play guitar.
-
Always place accuracy in fingering, timing and rhythm above speed in anything.
-
Failing to plan is planning to fail.. One of the most important things you need when learning guitar is structure. Develop a routine and stick to it, when a routine becomes easy, move on to the next.
-
Memorize the notes that make up a chord or a scale, not just the fingering or shapes. It will make you a much better guitarist in the long run and you will be able to speak the language when talking to other musicians or writing songs.
-
Always try to utilize the proper fingering when playing chords or single notes. This will assist you greatly as you move onto advanced concepts and lead guitar playing.
-
Whether picking notes singly or playing chords make sure the volume of your down strokes and up-strokes are equal, otherwise your rhythm will be lop sided.
-
Develop your ear. It’s probably the most important thing you’ll ever do as a musician.
-
Learn some theory, it’s not that scary.
-
Have fun!
